  1. Overview
    1. Introduction

This document details configuration and transfer of the Siemens Operator Panels using the Protool Software (v5.01)

  2. Creating a New Project
  3. Select File, New

You must now select the correct operator panel

Select the correct display in the wizard box as shown below:

Check the image displayed on the left matches your panel!

The protocol must now be selected

Clicking on the ‘Paremeters’ button will allow configuration of the PLC parameters:

These parameter vary from OP to TP (etc) so careful analysis of the parameters is required!

The default for MPI is the panel is node 1 and the PLC is node 2

In the last wizard box, selecting the ‘standard peoject’ is useful to generate quick projects!

  4. Copying from PC to the Operator Panel

Connect using

    1. the Siemens S5 PLC lead (1BD20) connected from your PC to the IF2 port (on the OP27, other panels may vary)
    2. MPI port (MIP cable from the PC to the IF1A port on the OP/TP)

The port type is selected under

File, Settings, Download

The actual transfer is performed by selecting ‘Download’ from the file menu - this is a sadly confusing term (especially if you use the internet!).

Remember: You MUST put the OP into Transfer Mode

You should normally get something like this:

Select OK and then you should see something like this:

Downloading of the firmware always takes a long time (try not to do it too often!)

This is (eventually) followed by:

"Downloading Configuration"

and hopefully...

"Download complete successfully"

    1. Downloading Problems
    2. If you have problems, try:

Change the baud rate to 9600 (the default is 57K Baud).

Check the COM port is correct

Check you have the correct connection type selected

If you get "No connection to the OP" remember

You MUST put the OP into Transfer Mode

    3. Putting the OP/TP into Transfer Mode
    4. The panel will automatically go into transfer mode ‘out of the box’

      1. Entering Transfer mode by selecting "serial download"

You can program a ‘transfer mode’ button into the OP/TP (highly recommended during commissioning, since this reduces ‘download’ times to a few seconds instead of a few minutes), otherwise you will have to reboot as in the next section.

This is done by default (in the project wizard) and the relevant key is found on the "System Settings" screen

      1. Entering Transfer mode by selecting "MPI download"

You can program an ‘MPI transfer mode’ button into the OP/TP (highly recommended during commissioning, since this reduces ‘download’ times to a few seconds instead of a few minutes), otherwise you will have to reboot as in the next section.

This is done by default (in the project wizard) and the relevant key is found on the "System Settings" screen

      1. Entering Transfer mode by Rebooting

Reboot the OP/TP if necessary and press

Esc, Right & down

all at the same time within a few seconds (obvious, really....)

If requested, press DEL to erase the internal Flash.

    1. Connecting using the S5 Cable
    2. This is simple but slow

You must select the COM port connection (File, Settings, Download)

      Select 38400 baud

Select 19200 baud if it fails.

Select 9600 baud if that fails.

    3. Connecting using the MPI port
    4. This is more complex – at least there are many more things to go wrong!

You must select the MPI connection (File, Settings, Download)

You must have the S7 PLC programming software installed

You must have an MPI cable (aka PC Adapter)

You must set up the tiny DIP switch on the side of the MPI cable correctly

You must set up the ‘max nodes on network’ correctly, both in the S7 programming software and the Protool Software.

    5. Internal Download errors

If you start getting "internal download" errors, then try:

Make sure you are not plugged into the IF1A port!

If nothing else succeeds, reboot and start again

  1. Main Project Window
  2. This is the main project window:

Most of the configuration of the project is done from this window.

Right click on the relevant items and click ‘insert Object’ to add a new item.

  3. Configuring the Communication Link to the PLC
  4.

This should be done under "Controllers " of the main window,

    Select Controller

Double click on the existing PLC

    select parameters

  5. Changing the Start Screen
  6. This is under Edit, Properties – click on the little tick to select the current screen as the start screen:

  7. Touch Screens

The main difference with touch screens is as follows:

    1. You change pages using the screen
    2. You change setpoints using the screen
    3. You start/stop devices using the touch screen
    1. Changing Pages

To change pages use:

Insert, Button

Note that this command is not available on the OP range (since you cannot have a touch button!)
